VINEYARDS

Our winery currently manages a vineyard area of about 4 hectares.
Hardly any other wine region is endowed by nature like the Thermenregion. Especially the geological background of the area once covered by a prehistoric sea ensures the wines of the Thermenregion their top quality and their unique character. A speciality of the region is that there are 2 different kinds of soil available for viticulture and both are forming the basis for full-bodied red wines as well as white wines rich of finesse.

On the slopes of a long mountain range layers of wetland with overlying weathered material have been formed for over millions of years and above them are heavy soils like loamy clay, sandy loam and brown soil with a high proportion of limestone. The grapes are ripening there to very elegant white wines, especially the varieties Zierfandler and Rotgipfler.

The broad, flat region to the east is marked by chalk and gravel soils. These soils are permeable, moisture drains off quickly after heavy rains and they warm up considerably in the sunlight. These properties and the high lime content of the soils of this area called "Steinfeld" provide perfect growing conditions for wine grapes, especially those of the most sophisticated Burgundian varieties Pinot Noir and St. Laurent.

The same geological events that once caused the retreat of the ancient sea are, incidentally, are also responsible for the formation of the thermal springs, which are used for more than two thousand years to improve human well-being and finally gave the region have its name.

Cambisol:
Medium to deep soil of Tertiary material. These soils have a good water supply and are ideal for growing grapes.

Chernozem (black earth):

Depending on thickness of the humus layer their water and nutrient holding capacity is low to high. Deep Chernozems are offering almost all varieties good growing conditions. Shallow ones are counted to the "heated floors" and are releasing the daytime stored heat during the night.

Pararendzina:

These are shallow humus-chalky soils of tertiary coarse and fine material - dry, high permeability, low water and nutrient holding capacity.

Because of the fact, that the quality for the best wines is produced in the vineyards, we set great value on accuracy and perfection! Depending on the variety and nature of individual vines we already regulate the harvest as soon as possible. Only a very intensive use of manual work guarantees us the best grape quality for the harvest. Also in plant protection, we work according to the principle "as much as necessary, as little as possible" to work environmentally friendly and efficient.
